La Mata has a protected natural park at its back door. The lagoons of La Mata and Torrevieja are a nature reserve, so the town could never be built over the way the coast south of it was, and it has stayed low-rise with a beach that runs for kilometres.
It is quieter than Torrevieja and a much larger share of the homes are holiday flats, empty for months at a time. Opening and checking a home before the owners arrive, and closing it up again after they leave, is a big part of our work here. Because the park limits how far the town can spread, most of it is two or three storeys and the same buildings have been standing for years.
La Mata is the northern edge of our core area, a few minutes up the coast from Torrevieja, and it carries no travel charge. Guardamar del Segura, the next town north, is outside the core and adds a travel charge per visit. The beach road runs the whole way down to Torrevieja, so getting from one to the other takes a few minutes.
